High winds and heavy rainfall could be in store for parts of Hamilton as the city and surrounding areas have been placed under a severe thunderstorm watch Tuesday (July 13).

Environment Canada issued the notice shortly before 1 p.m. warning that these thunderstorms will be capable of producing strong wind gusts up to 100 km/h, large hail up to 2 cm in diameter and heavy rainfall of 50 mm within an hour.

“Large hail can damage property and cause injury,” the weather agency said in the warning.

“Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.”

The watch remains in effect until early Tuesday evening when conditions in the area are expected to settle down.

Hamiltonians can expect some rain showers overnight with a possibility of thunderstorms but local rainfall amounts in the 15 to 25 mm range.
