A fire at a Stoney Creek townhouse complex caused $1 million in damage early Monday morning.

The Hamilton Fire Department received reports at 12:15 a.m. regarding a structure fire at 174 Highbury Dr. — in the Rymal Rd. and Upper Centennial area.

Fire crews arrived at the two-storey attached townhome to find the blaze advancing toward the other units and immediately requested additional units.

Fire chief David Cunliffe says crews initiated “aggressive interior fire-fighting operations” and reported heavy fire and extreme heat as the fire spread to the second floor.

“Through a coordinated effort, firefighters contained the fire to unit 15 and brought it under control in approximately 25 minutes,” he said.

The first floor of the unit was destroyed, and the second floor suffered significant structural damage.

There was also smoke damage to the neighbouring units, and the fire damaged the exterior of the adjacent homes.

“No injuries have been reported at this time, and the cause of the fire is undetermined,” says Chief Cunliffe.

The Ontario fire marshall has been notified.
