“Hamilton Steel Grey” is now one of the jersey colours for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

The Canadian Football League team, on the occasion of the city’s 176th birthday and the kickoff of the league’s season, announced it has added an alternative uniform. Along with their traditional black home jerseys and white road jerseys, the Ticats will now rock a “Made In The Hammer” uniform that includes an H logo on both sides of the helmet and on the shoulders of the jersey instead of the team’s primary logo.

In a release, the Tiger-Cats said the grey jerseys — with matching grey pants — will debut on July 1 during a home game against the Edmonton Elks at Tim Hortons Field. They will also be sported during an Oct. 21 home game against Ottawa Redblacks.

The H logo is a nod to the early 1900s Hamilton Tigers. The negative space of the H is used to create two hammers. Instead of “Hamilton” between the collar and numerals on the front of the year, “The Hammer” will be displayed to celebrate Hamilton’s nickname.

Both the collar of the jersey and the helmet stripe have hammers woven into the design. The jersey numerals are black, outlined by the traditional gold.

“Our franchise has a rich and storied history in the city and we’ve been proud to call Hamilton home for 153 years.” Hamilton Sports Group president and chief operating officer Matt Afinec stated. “The inspiration for Made in the Hammer is to celebrate the indelible link between Hamilton, the Tiger-Cats and the amazing fans of this team who call this city home and still consider this city home, even if they live abroad.”

Traditionally, the Tiger-Cats have worn black jerseys with gold numerals at home and white jerseys with black numerals during away games. The team’s helmet has been black with gold tiger decals since 1986. At various times, gold alternate jerseys and white helmets have made their way into the team’s look.

The Tiger-Cats face the Saskatchewan Roughriders in their season opener on Saturday (7 p.m., TSN, Ticats Audio Network). The home opener is the following Saturday, June 18, at 6:30 p.m. against the Calgary Stampeders.
