It appears the Hamilton Tiger-Cats will start the season with a kicking and punting duo who are new to the Canadian Football League game.

After some roster moves announced Friday, Taylor Bertolet is the only kicker on the active roster and and Joel Whitford is the only punter listed.

Bertolet, a 28-year-old American, played at Texas A&M during the Johnny Manziel era and has had trials with five NFL teams, while also playing in the Alliance of American Football in 2019.

Whitford, a 28-year-old Australian, played three seasons with the Washington Huskies in the Pac-12 conference, where he averaged 43.0 yards per punt for his career. He was the Tiger-Cats’ first pick in the last CFL Global draft.

Michael Domagala, a St. Catharines native who kicked and punted in his university playing days at Carleton, has been assigned to the practice roster.

Wide receiver Emmanuel Butler and kicker Jimmy Camacho, both Americans, were released. Camacho, who was brought in toward the end of training camp, played for Fresno State while Tiger-Cats head coach Orlondo Steinauer was the Mountain West Conference team’s defensive coordinator in 2017.

The Tiger-Cats visit the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in their CFL season opener on Thursday (Aug. 4).
