Hamilton Tiger-Cats add D-back, receiver ahead of Argos home-and-home

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have added reinforcements in the receiving and pass defender groups ahead of a two-game set with their archrivals.
The Tiger-Cats announced they have signed American defensive back Rodney Randle Jr. and American wide receiver Jaylon Redd. Redd played major-college football with the Oregon Ducks, the same Pac-12 team where injured Ticats star receiver Bralon Addison developed his game before coming north.
Wide receiver Tyler Turner was also released, the club said.
The 25-year-old Randle Jr. has played the rough equivalent of one full CFL season, appearing in 19 games over two seasons with the Montréal Alouettes (2021-22), registering 44 defensive tackles, 11 special teams tackles and two interceptions. The 6-foot, 170-pound native of Beaumont, Texas also spent time in the National Football League with the Los Angeles Chargers (2019) and in the XFL with the Tampa Bay Vipers (2020).
Randle Jr. will be joining a defensive backs group that operated without both starting corners during a last-second 29-28 defeat at Montréal last week. Jumal Rolle (hamstring) was on the one-game injured list last week. Ciante Evans (hand) is on the six-game list.
The 23-year-old Redd has had NFL looks from the Seattle Seahawks and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2022) since wrapping up his college days. The 5-foot-9, 170-pound native of Carson, Calif., played 52 games over five seasons (2017-21) for Oregon. With the Ducks, Redd tallied 131 career receptions for 1,435 yards with 16 receiving touchdowns, also adding 24 rushes for 179 yards with five TDs.

Hamilton has shown some quick-strike capacity in the passing game of late, even though starting quarterback Dane Evans has missed the last two games. Tim White has housed 60-yard touchdowns in each of the past two games on hookups with backup QB Matthew Shiltz. But the Tiger-Cats have also a trio of trusted American receivers — Addison, slotback Anthony Johnson and wide receiver Papi White — out with longer-term injuries.
White was named a CFL top performer of the week for the second week in a row after his effort against the Alouettes. Working out of a slotback position, White had 145 receiving yards and two touchdowns while catching 11-of-14 targets.
Montreal quarterback Trevor Harris, who led a fourth-quarter comeback win against Hamilton and totalled 382 passing yards, also earned a top performer nod. British Columbia Lions defensive end Obum (Boom) Gwachum was also honoured after making five defensive tackles and two sacks during B.C.’s away win against Saskatchewan.
The Tiger-Cats (3-7) visit the Toronto Argonauts (4-5) on Friday (7:30 p.m., TSN/RDS/Ticats Audio Network). They then finish their four-game season series with the Labour Day Classic on Sept. 5 at Tim Hortons Field.
The teams split their first two meetings, but Toronto is +7 on point differential.
