With St. Patrick’s Day right around the corner, Hamilton residents planning to celebrate the holiday are being urged to keep festivities small and respectful.

Earlier this week, McMaster University posted a message on its website urging students to avoid high-risk settings, large gatherings and to follow public health guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Most importantly, however, the school is hoping celebrants will keep the well-being and safety of the community top of mind.

“Heading into St. Patrick’s Day, please be considerate of the families, seniors, and fellow students who live around the university,” said Sean Van Koughnett, associate vice-president and dean of students at McMaster University in the message.

“While socializing with friends, our ask is that students avoid the extremely high risks associated with large gatherings, whether in Hamilton or in any community across Ontario.”

Hamilton Police and Paramedics have also partnered with the school in promoting the safe return to St. Patrick’s Day revelry after two years of the pandemic.

“McMaster has been an important community partner in encouraging students to be good neighbours especially around times like St. Patrick’s Day,” said police chief Frank Bergen.

“Helping students understand the importance of respecting their neighbours goes a long way in reinforcing the many positive contributions students make to our city.”

The City of Hamilton also urged residents to keep celebrations respectful and also pointed out that its noise bylaw will be in effect and enforced.
