Hamilton Public Library to host Indigenous Market on select Saturdays for rest of 2022

The Hamilton Public Library (HPL) has announced the launch of an Indigenous Market at its Central location.

Starting this Saturday (May 14), and running on dedicated Saturdays until mid-December, regional Indigenous artists and makers will be setting up shop at the Central branch to sell one-of-kind handcrafted items like jewelry, ceramics, leatherwork and more.

“The City of Hamilton is excited by the work that the Hamilton Public Library is doing to showcase the talents of Indigenous artists and makers through the establishment of an Indigenous Market at Central Library,” said Shelly Hill, Manager of Indigenous Relations for the City of Hamilton.

“This initiative is a great example of delivering results on the Urban Indigenous Strategy – Action 21 – Identify or create ways to support Indigenous artists.”

Each market will feature a new set of creators and by the end of the year, it’s expected that more than 30 artists and makers with be showcased during the event.

The Indigenous Market initiative at HPL Is funded by the federal government’s ‘My Main Street Community Activator Program’ which supports community placemaking projects.

“We invite everyone in the region to visit the Indigenous Market at Central Library to connect and support talented artists and crafters, learn more about Indigenous culture and traditions and support the local economy,” said HPL CEO, Paul Takala.

  • WHEN: Every second and third Saturday, May-December; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
    May 14 and 21; June 11 and 18; July 9 and 16; August 13 and 20; September 10 and 17; October 8 and 15; November 12 and 19; December 17
  • WHERE: Central Library; 55 York Boulevard, Hamilton
