More than a thousand residences and businesses in downtown Hamilton will likely be without power until late Thursday night, Alectra Utilities says.

The outage comes after two days of high heat and humidity in the city, with temperatures peaking at 33C earlier in the day. The outage covers a rectangular-shaped area stretching west to east from Catharine Street to Sanford Avenue, and north-south from Wilson St. to Stinson St.

Alectra says a total of 1,284 customers are affected. A crew has been sent out, and the expected time of resumption is 11:30 p.m.

Both Main and King streets pass through the affected area. Any intersections with disabled traffic lights should be treated as a four-way stops.

Progress in restoring power can be tracked at horizonutilities.com.
