HAMILTON — The Hamilton Police Service says it is investigating after a driver allegedly struck two officers at a New Year’s Eve RIDE check and then failed to remain on the scene.

They say the incident took place around 10:55 p.m. on Friday when officers were speaking to two drivers in the southbound lanes of Claremont Access.

They allege a waiting 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe suddenly pulled out and drove through the RIDE lanes, striking two officers, who were knocked unconscious.

The officers remain in hospital with serious injuries and will both require surgery, but police have yet to locate the driver of the vehicle, which was later recovered unoccupied.

Police say the 2020 Santa Fe is believed to have been involved in an earlier incident near Fennell Avenue and Hoover Crescent, where officers approached a driver who was unconscious at the wheel.

As the officers went to make an arrest, police allege the Santa Fe was placed in drive and struck a cruiser before fleeing.
