In a significant development, a Hamilton Police officer has been formally charged with sexual assault today (June 6) after allegedly committing a criminal offense against a woman.

The Director of the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), Joseph Martino, released a statement confirming the presence of reasonable grounds to believe that Constable Jeffery Turnbull was involved in the sexual assault.

Constable Turnbull now faces one count of sexual assault, in accordance with section 271 of the Criminal Code, as a result of the investigation conducted by the SIU.

According to authorities, the case will now proceed to the Ontario Court of Justice at 45 Main Street East in Hamilton, where Constable Turnbull is required to appear on July 6.

“As the matter is before the courts, and in consideration of the fair trial interests of the accused, the SIU will not provide further comment on the investigation,” SIU said in a statement.

Constable Turnbull was believed to have committed the sexual assault between February and April of 2022, according to SIU.
