The Hamilton Police Service hate crime unit is investigating an incident in Waterdown.

In a video shared on social media by Alexis Hebert on Monday (May 31), a woman can be heard referring to Herbert’s six-month-old baby as, “a n***er baby” on two separate occasions before calling Herbert a “slut.”

After being asked to repeat the slur, the woman retreats inside her home.

According to the Facebook post, the woman is a neighbour who took exception to Herbert’s mother and grandmother visiting and threatened to report the incident to local bylaw officers for breaking COVID-19 rules before taking photos of their license plate.

The post claims that the interaction began after Herbert questioned why the woman was taking photos. Under provincial COVID-19 rules, gatherings of up to five people are allowed.

“This woman would not have been held accountable for her actions if not for the camera recording, a sad but common occurrence in communities like this,” reads the caption under the video. “Since relocating to Waterdown in 2000, being one of the only black families, my family and I have continuously experienced firsthand the negative effects racism can have on one’s own self-identity and self-worth.”
