A Hamilton pizzeria that fed families and the cooking-disinclined for more than a generation closed its doors earlier this week.

Mattina Pizzeria (104 Cannon St E.), located in the Beasley neighbourhood near downtown, announced on social media Sunday that it was closing permanently. An Instagram post referred to a going-away party, saying the restaurant’s operation had involved “26 years of hardwork, dedication, tears, love & an abundance of memories.”

Considered a “Hamilton staple” by local foodies, Mattina also offered Portuguese dishes, and catered events large and small in addition to serving takeout.

The Beasley neighbourhood is hardly lacking for pizza choice within easy walking distance. Along with numerous shops along King Street, the Topper’s Pizza chain has walk-in location with the entrance on the south side of Cannon Street East. Plaza Pizza & Wings (90 Wellington St. N.) is also a fixture in the neighbourhood at the southeast corner of Wellington and Wilson streets.
