Hamilton man faces 4 attempted murder charges, after a shooting in Wasaga Beach

A 21-year-old man from Hamilton faces over a dozen charges, including attempted murder, in connection to both an alleged shooting in Wasaga Beach, and an alleged assault in Collingwood.

The incidents happened about three days apart during the second week of July in central-western Ontario cottage country. The accused was arrested without incident last Thursday (Aug. 4) by the Huronia West detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police, with the assistance of Hamilton Police Service. The Collingwood and The Blue Mountains OPP, as well as the OPP ROPE (Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement squad say they also placed a male under arrest.

At approximately 10:54 p.m. on July 14, the Huronia West OPP and Simcoe County paramedics responded to a 9-1-1 call for a shooting at a residence located on Bianca Cres. in Wasaga Beach. The arriving officers found a woman with a gunshot wound. She was treated at a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect in that shooting was also wanted in connection with an alleged assault on First St. in Collingwood around 7 p.m. on July 11. A a man was allegedly assaulted by two men — including one who appeared to be armed with a handgun.

The OPP describe the physical injuries to the victim in that incident to be “serious but non-life-threatening.”

The accused was arrested without incident.

Nana-Yaw Asante, 21, was remanded into a custody and held for a bail hearing.

He is facing a total of 16 criminal counts:

  • Attempted murder (four counts)
  • Aggravated assault
  • Assault causing bodily harm
  • Discharging a firearm into or at a place in a reckless manner
  • Discharging a restricted firearm or a prohibited firearm with intent to commit an offence
  • Failure to comply with Undertaking
  • Firearm — Used While Committing Offence
  • Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of Firearm
  • Pointing a Firearm (two counts)
  • Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking
  • Possession of prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Firearm
