It took a few months but a Hamilton man has been charged with manslaughter following the March 29 death of a 32-year-old St. Catharines man.

On that day, Niagara Police found the man dead in his Roehampton Avenue area apartment in St. Catharines.

The police teamed up with the the Opioid Enforcement and Education Unit (OEEU) to investigate and more than a month later laid charges.

A 33-year-old Hamilton man was charged on May 5 with taking a motor vehicle without consent and failing to comply with a release order.

A 30-year-old Hamilton woman was charged a couple weeks later on May 23 with taking a motor vehicle without consent.

As police continued to investigate the 32-year-old man’s death, it was revealed it was related to the consumption of an illegally obtained opioid, specifically fentanyl.

Today (June 10), the 33-year-old Hamilton man, who has been in custody at the Hamilton Wentworth Detention Center, appeared via video at the courthouse in St. Catharines and the charges increased.

He was charged with manslaughter, two counts of trafficking a controlled substance and failing to comply with a release order.

The two people from Hamilton are not being identified as Niagara Police say doing so would “identify witnesses and comprise the integrity of the investigation through the judicial process.”
