Hamilton lifts termination policy for unvaccinated workers

Hamilton politicians have ended a controversial policy that required workers to prove vaccination status or face termination.

Councillors today (Aug. 12) voted to end the policy which comes a year after it was implemented in an effort to curb the spread of COVID-19.

The policy had generated plenty of pushback from City employees with many having fought for the right to remain unvaccinated.

A report presented to council says abolishing the policy could save the city up to $7.4 million it would have needed to spend in fighting court challenges brought forward by workers.

It is believed more than 250 Hamilton City staff have been on unpaid leave facing terminating because of their vaccination status. The policy change means these workers will now be able to return to their jobs without being vaccinated and not face any further disciplinary measures.
