Reports tonight say the landlord believed to be responsible for killing the tenants of his Hamilton home has been identified. The names of his victims have also been revealed.

Terry Brekka, a 57-year-old man who has lived at the Jones Rd. address for several years, is the man believed to be responsible for killing the people who rented out a basement apartment in the house.

CBC Hamilton recently reported that Carissa MacDonald, 27, and Aaron Stone, 28, were the couple gunned down in the Stoney Creek neighbourhood.

Hamilton Police have not confirmed the identity of anyone involved in the shootings.

The article says Brekka was a steelworker who lived in the home for about 20 years, adding that neighbours say he largely kept to himself and was estranged from his family.

Reports say that the victims were engaged to be married. MacDonald worked for the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board, while Stone was an apprenticing electrician.

Events along Jones Rd. escalated quickly on Saturday (May 27) with initial calls to police about a dispute and shots being fired.

When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered the victims and called for backup while the suspect barricaded himself inside the home.

For the next several hours, Hamilton tactical officers surrounded the home during a tense standoff while negotiators tried for a peaceful solution. Residents of neighbouring homes were told not to leave their houses and remain in the basement.

Around 10 p.m., according to police accounts, after several shots rang out from the house, officers returned fire. Some reports indicate that the suspect was killed by bullets that went through a door.

Police say the incident unfolded earlier in the day when the couple complained to the homeowner about the lack of repairs needed in their unit.

Witnesses have said the couple was shot while trying to flee the home.
