After 40 years, Harry's Fish and Chips in Hamilton is closing.

For mountain residents, Hamilton fish and chips became synonymous with Harry’s. Now, after 40 years, the family-owned restaurant is closing its doors.

Located on Fennel Ave. in a plaza at the corner of Upper Ottawa, Harry’s Fish and Chips evolved into a go-to spot for those looking to smell and taste the Maritimes. Those who traditionally observe Good Friday would flock to the mom-and-pop shop — an annual tradition that owner Ivan Janssen often referred to as its “Super Bowl.”

However, thousands of customers will look for a new tradition next April.

Janssen announced he will permanently close Harry’s on Christmas Eve before listing the property for sale — four decades after his parents, Harry and Grace, opened the British-style fish and chips restaurant.

Janssen has told regular customers that the workload at Harry’s has become too demanding. With a family at home, he’s looking to do something different but hopes the new owners carry on his family’s legacy.

Harry’s Fish and Chips is open on weekdays from noon to 7 p.m.
