Hamilton fire 333

Those who have dreamed of becoming a firefighter, your chance might be here.

The Hamilton Fire Department is looking for volunteer firefighters. This is “one of the most rewarding, engaging and exciting opportunities within your community,” according to the job posting.

But it is also a significant time commitment. Recruits must complete a comprehensive 260 hour training program, and there are bi-weekly, in-person training blocks, consisting of 16-18 hours over the course of a weekend, Saturday and Sunday. Plus there are additional training sessions on evenings during the week.

And applicants must live within eight kilometres from the volunteer fire station they are applying (based on Google Maps).

Recruits perform a range of tasks to serve the community including fighting fires, search and rescue, responding to collisions, hazardous material calls and first aid in emergency calls.

There are also non-emergency duties such as fire safety inspections, cleaning and maintaining the station, and public relations activities.

Although this is a volunteer position, firefighters are paid $20.64 to $25.80 per hour. Volunteer firefighters are compensated for attending emergency scenes, training and performing station duties.

Recruits must provide proof they fully vaccinated or provide proof of valid exemption.
