Hamilton is looking to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, and the group behind the bid is travelling more than 5,600 kilometres to Birmingham, England this week to watch the 2022 games in person.

The delegation headed to the UK includes Mayor Fred Eisenberger.

“Hamilton is proud to have the distinction of hosting the first Empire Games in 1930. Visiting the Birmingham Commonwealth Games and Manchester with the Hamilton 100 Bid Corporation delegation will be educational and informative on the economic and social impacts such an event can provide a host community,” said Eisenberger.

The Hamilton 100 Bid Corporation includes PJ Mercanti, Louis Frapporti, and Greg Maychak.

“Visiting Birmingham with regional leaders to consult with the games’ hosts during the delivery of the 2022 Games is an unprecedented opportunity to assess the operational challenges associated with managing such an event in real-time,” says Frapporti.

2030 will mark the 100th anniversary of the games, book-ended with Hamilton as the host.

According to organizers, this year’s games will host over 4,500 athletes from 72 nations and territories and are expected to draw more than 200,000 visitors. It will also reportedly have a broadcast audience of 1.5 billion.

Also attending in Birmingham as part of the accredited observer program will be McMaster University’s Trish Chantsehl and Sean Van Koughnett. The city says McMaster is a key partner in the effort to secure the games for Ontario in 2030.
