Hamilton breweries Merit and Clifford went to the 2022 Canadian Brewing Awards in Calgary hoping for some continued recognition and came home with four trophies for their display cases.

Merit, which just celebrated five years in downtown Hamilton, scored a gold in the Experimental Beer category for Nowhere: Blaufrankisch and bronze in the same group for By&By Pinot Noir Tripel.

Clifford, Hamilton’s only east-end brewery and the 2019 Canadian Brewery Awards Brewery of the Year, also earned two medals: a silver for its Dark Streets of London ESB in the English Bitters category and an Honourable Mention in Belgian-Style Abbey Ale/Pale Ale for Marigold.

The top Ontario Breweries at the event – held this year in Calgary – were Wellington Brewery of Guelph and Shacklands of Toronto, who each won four medals. Shacklands swept the American Belgo-Style category and scored two gold medals in total.

The Brewery of the Year went to Howe Sound Brewery of B.C.
