Highway 6 near Waterdown is shut down after a major collision that has sent six people to the hospital, including two with life-threatening injuries.

Ontario Provincial Police say that as many as five vehicles might have been involved in collisions, including head-on collisions. Impairment might have been a factor.

The other four people involved in the crash also have serious injuries.

The highway has been closed in both directions between Concession Road 5 East and Concession Road 6, say the Ontario Provincial Police. A collision reconstruction team is at the scene, which typically means that delays will last for several hours until they have completed their investigation.

The OPP is asking witnesses to call the Burlington OPP detachment (905-681-2511). Tips can also be reported to Crime Stoppers (1-800-222-8477, or 1-800-222-TIPS).

As of 10:30 p.m., Hwy. 6 remained closed.
