An online pet sale gone wrong in Milton has left Halton police searching for a pair of alleged dognappers.

According to a police report, the victim arranged the sale of two Dachshunds on Kijiji. The exchange was arranged for the corner of Sauve St. and Derry Rd. around 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 8.

Police said that when the pair of prospective purchasers arrived, they grabbed the dogs and took off on foot.

The victim pursued them in her car, but gave up after the man grabbed a brick and started moving towards her. He smacked her car with his hand before fleeing with the pups.

The man is described as approximately 6-foot with a thin build while the woman is described as 5-foot-6 with a medium to heavy build. Police said they are working to identify and locate the suspects.

Halton police remind residents there is a Buy & Sell Exchange Zone at the police station located at 95 Oak Walk Dr., near Dundas St. and Sixth Line, in Oakville.

If you can’t make it there, here are some precautions people can take to protect themselves during sales or purchases arranged online:

  • Use the buddy system when possible. Bring a family or friend with you, or at the very least, let someone know who you will be meeting, the time, and the location of the exchange.
  • When meeting in person, always inspect goods you wish to purchase before giving money to the seller.
  • Complete your transaction during daytime hours only.
  • To reduce the potential of falling victim to fraud, never complete a buy and sell transaction by mail.
  • Limit the amount of personal information you provide.
  • Stop. Pause. Think. If something seems too good to be true, it likely is.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Halton police at 905-825-4747.

Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or at the website.
