Halton police say when to stop – and when not to stop – for school buses

Halton police have issued a reminder to drivers to stop for school buses.

According to Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS), they have received various calls in relation to stopping for school buses on multiple-lane highways.

“I have received calls relating to stopping for school busses on multiple-lane highways,” reads Halton police’s Twitter page.

“With red lights flashing, drivers shall stop before reaching the bus and shall not proceed until the bus moves or lights have stopped flashing. A median is the only exception.”

Drivers are reminded that in Ontario it is illegal to fail to stop for a stopped school bus that has its red lights flashing. As a result, school bus drivers as well as other wit­nesses can report vehicles that have illegally passed a school bus.

Those who don’t stop could be fined between $400 to $2,000 and receive six demerit points for a first offence. Those who are convicted a second time within five years could face a fine between $1,000 and $4,000, six demerit points and even potentially go to jail for up to six months.
