Halton District School Board (HDSB) has announced that they will be creating a human rights and equity advisory committee.

The Human Rights & Equity Advisory Committee (HREAC) was created by the HDSB with representation from staff, parents and guardians and the community to respond to human rights and equity initiatives that support the HDSB focus on the achievements and well-being of students.

Back in February, a call for committee members took place and was officially established this Spring.

The HREAC will help support commitments outlined in the Human Rights Equity Action & Accountability Plan: The Way Forward and 2020-2024 Multi-Year Plan.

The plan provides actions that the Board will be held accountable for by students, staff, families and the community and reflects the HDSB’s commitment to create and maintain safe, inclusive learning and working environments that are free from discrimination.

Additionally, a priority initiative called the Discriminatory & Harmful Language Protocol this year has been implemented in order to ensure schools are free from discriminatory language.

“We recognize the systems of oppression that exist within society at large and within educational institutions, including the HDSB,” says Rob Eatough, Superintendent of Education.

“The actions and the accountability measures in The Way Forward seek to dismantle systems of oppression and challenge dominant traditions. The Human Rights & Equity Advisory Committee will provide input on the scope and direction of initiatives to promote human rights and equity across the HDSB.”
