Halton District School Board (HDSB) trustees recently approved a plan to relocate Gary Allan Learning Centre to Robert Bateman High School in Burlington.

Additionally, at the same meeting, HDSB trustees approved to declare the rest of the Robert Bateman High School facility surplus to its needs along with circulating it for purchase to other public agencies.

“I have championed the idea of moving Gary Allan High School to the Bateman site since the decision to close Bateman was made in 2017, and I am very pleased to see the Board moving in this direction. The continued presence of a secondary school in southeast Burlington is good for the community,” said Amy Collard, Ward 5 Burlington Trustee.

The Board is also seeking to keep a long-term interest of approximately 45,000 square feet within the facility in order to accommodate Gary Allan Learning Centre.

The plan is to ensure that the board continues to maintain a presence in the Southeast Burlington area along with continuing to offer important educational programs within the community.

This is part of its disposition strategy of the former Robert Bateman High School property, which provides adult education programs along with language instruction programs for newcomers and others.

Public agencies, which include any government or educational entity that has jurisdiction within the area where the school is located, will have the opportunity to submit their interest in the remaining area.

The remainder of the facility is approximately 167,000 square feet and would operate for personal uses in collaboration with the board, through the Ontario Regulation 444/98 circulation process.

According to the HDSB, the remaining Robert Bateman HS facility will be offered to prospective public agencies as shared ownership, or as a long-term leaseback arrangement with the board for up to 25 years on a cost-recovery basis.
