A proposal from Habitat for Humanity to build a total of 46 stacked townhouse on the east side of downtown Whitby was welcomed by the town at Monday’s Committee of the Whole meeting, with Mayor Elizabeth Roy saying she was “super excited” by the project.

Habitat for Humanity plans to build 26 townhouse units on vacant land between Gilbert Street and Dunlop Street, west of Reynolds Street, and 20 more units immediately to the north at the northeast corner of Hickory Street and Dunlop.

All units will be affordable housing, with priority given to Whitby residents.

The organization hopes to have approvals in place mid-year and projects shovels in the ground by fall, with completion by late 2027 or early 2028.

Flora Tay with Habitat for Humanities said they are still waiting on a full funding package from the province “to help with the funding strain” and should have a better idea about the rents for the units later this year.

Whitby Councillor Rhonda Mulcahy called it a “project of envy.”

“Everybody would like to see this multiplied across the province.”
