Peel police officer committed no offence during takedown in Malton

A man who went on a shooting rampage, killing a Toronto cop in Mississauga and then an auto repair business owner in Milton, died after an exchange of gunfire with police, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has found.

Preliminary findings from the SIU indicate “an exchange of gunfire between officers and a 40-year-old man (identified as Sean Petrie) before he died in Hamilton Monday,” the SIU said in a released statement today (Sept. 15).

Previously, it was not known if the suspect fired a gun in Hamilton.

The incident began on Monday, Sept. 12 when Toronto Police Const. Andrew Hong, 48, was shot at the Meadowvale Tim Hortons in north Mississauga at 2:15 p.m. The suspect then shot a man in order to steal his vehicle. That man is in stable condition in hospital.

Petrie then drove to Milton and shot and killed auto shop owner, Shakeel Ashraf, 38. Two other men were also shot. One is recovering from a gunshot wound to the leg while the other, a 28-year-old international exchange student, is in hospital and not expected to survive.

The gunman then fled to Hamilton where Halton and Hamilton police found him at the Hamilton Cemetery on York Blvd. around 4:30 p.m. Because police officers shot the man, Ontario’s police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was called in.

The SIU continues to investigate this incident.
