One of Brampton’s largest food assistance organizations is ready to start work on a new facility that aims to dramatically expand services for residents struggling with food insecurity.

Knights Table will officially break ground June 17 on a new community hub at 73 Hale Road, marking a major milestone in the organization’s 34-year history and the first time it will operate from a permanent, purpose-built location.

The project comes as demand for food assistance continues to rise across Brampton, with Knights Table reporting more than 500,000 visits over the past year while serving more than 350,000 meals and distributing more than four million pounds of food annually.

Officials say the new facility will allow the organization to expand its capacity and provide a broader range of services to individuals and families facing financial hardship.

“For years, we have done everything we can to serve our community with the resources available to us,” said Executive Director Annie Bynoe. “Now, we are creating a space that truly reflects the dignity our clients deserve — a place where people can access food, support and community without barriers.”

The new facility will feature a grocery-style food bank, commercial kitchen, dining area, classrooms and community space designed to support food distribution, skills training and educational programming.

Knights Table says the goal is to move beyond emergency food assistance by offering wraparound supports that help people build stability and independence.

Plans for the facility include a market-style food bank that allows clients greater choice, a teaching kitchen for food preparation and skills development, and dedicated space for community partners to deliver services on site.

The organization expects the expansion will eventually allow it to triple its service capacity, distribute more than six million pounds of food annually and increase outreach to vulnerable residents throughout the city.

Brampton Regional Councillor Rowena Santos, who has worked with Knights Table through initiatives such as the Brampton Food Hub and Social Support Task Force, said the project represents an important investment in community infrastructure.

“Knights Table has long been a cornerstone in Brampton’s fight against food insecurity, embodying compassion, collaboration, dignity and community resilience,” Santos said in a statement.

The groundbreaking ceremony will also launch Knights Table’s capital campaign as the organization seeks to raise the remaining funds needed to renovate the building.

The organization is seeking approximately $2.49 million in capital funding to support the property purchase and phased renovations.

Founded more than three decades ago, Knights Table operates 365 days a year and provides food, meals and support services to residents experiencing poverty, homelessness and food insecurity across Peel Region.
