Grimsby man charged after purse stolen from elderly woman in parking lot

A Grimsby man has been charged in connection to the purse robbery of an elderly woman in a grocery store parking lot.

On Feb. 8 at 12:55 pm, Niagara Police were called to the scene following reports of a woman in her 80s having her purse stolen in the lot of a store at South Service Rd. and Casablanca Blvd. The women was unharmed.

The suspect escaped in a Mazda sedan and then was later believed to have used the woman’s credit cards to buy lottery tickets and gift cards at a number of Grimsby businesses.

The police were able to identify a suspect and arrested him yesterday (Feb. 14).

Matthew Cameron Norton, 37, of Grimsby has been charged with robbery, unauthorized use of credit cards and failure to comply with an undertaking.

He was held in custody and appeared today (Feb. 15) at a video bail hearing at the courthouse in St. Catharines.
