A Milton teenager has been named as just one of 36 students in Canada to receive a 2023 Loran Scholarship.

Jacob Kranjac, a Grade 12 student at Bishop Reding Catholic Secondary School, earned the honour after being one of nearly 4,800 applicants.

The Loran Award is a four-year leadership enrichment program consisting of summer work experiences, mentorship, scholar gatherings, an annual living stipend, and a tuition waiver at one of 25 university partners.

Kranjac was recognized for his outstanding and unwavering character, service, and leadership, according to a spokesperson for the Halton Catholic District School Board.

“He established his school’s Ontario Students Against Impaired Driving chapter, for which he plans local and provincial initiatives. He is involved with his community’s youth leadership task force and leads events to empower youth. He is president of the Bishop Reding business club, part of his school’s leadership team, Mock Trial and Model UN clubs. Jacob also works outside of school as a hockey referee.”

Loran Scholars are provided with the opportunity to build critical skills and capacity for leadership, to expand horizons by taking on new challenges and exploring diverse experiences, and to join a community of purpose-driven peers who are committed to leaving the world better than they found it.
