What one Toronto councillor calls “Google glitches” have been corrected after smartphone maps tried sending drivers the wrong way down a one-way street.

Toronto Ward 12 Toronto—St. Paul’s Coun. Josh Matlow says his office was alerted about the Google Maps issue on Wednesday, directing drivers to “illegally” head north on Winona Drive past Belvidere Avenue.

Winona Drive is a one-way street in that area, alternating directions at Beldivere.

Vehicles can drive northbound between Vaughaun Road and Beldivere, but are only open to southbound traffic between Belvidere and Eglinton Avenue.

Matlow says the city’s transportation services department contacted Google Maps to rectify the error, and even installed a temporary “Do Not Enter” sign to prevent cars from continuing north along Winona Drive to Eglinton Avenue.

And while Matlow says the glitch was fixed early on Monday, he said Google Maps “needs to be far more responsive to residents’ complaints, and far more transparent about the processes in place.”
