Calgary-based Good Earth Cafes is moving into the Indigo Books location at the Oshawa Centre next year, a site abandoned by the Starbucks chain during the pandemic.

Good Earth has been rapidly expanding their brand in recent years and ramped up their plans when Starbucks announced in 2020 it would be shuttering 200 locations across the country, a number boosted to 300 the following year. The Oshawa location was one of those sites.

“We are so pleased to be growing and reconnecting communities with exceptional coffee and fresh food served a social hub,” Good Earth Cafes Ltd. founder Nan Eskenazi said in a release. “We believe the human connection and interaction that takes place in our coffeehouses is valuable – as valuable as the coffee and food we serve.”

Earlier this year Good Earth announced a partnership with Indigo to launch cafes in select bookstores across the country, starting with five locations in Alberta and Manitoba. Since then, they have added other new coffee houses throughout their western Canada base, along with a contemporary café design inspired by earthy tones and natural textures.

The company also announced they would be opening cafes inside hospitals in 2023, including two in Mississauga: Credit Valley Hospital and Mississauga Hospital.

Next year will be about opening new markets for the company, especially in the GTA. They currently operate 45 locations in the west and in Quebec.

New locations opening this year and the first quarter of 2023 include:

  • Chapters – Chinook in Calgary (November)
  • Indigo – Signal Hill in Calgary (November)
  • Calgary Courts Centre in Calgary (November)
  • Indigo – Fairway in Kitchener
