A GoFundMe created for the family of a Niagara-on-the-Lake chef killed in a car collision has more than tripled its original goal of $18,000.

As of today (Feb. 2), the GoFundMe, created Jan. 24, has raised $56,838 for the family of Daniel Tong, 32, who was killed in an accident on the Niagara Falls-bound QEW near the Ontario St. exit in Lincoln on January 21.

Tong, a chef at Ruffino’s Pasta Bar and Grill in Niagara-on-the-Lake, leaves behind his wife Melanie, daughter Olivia, 7, and son Atlas, 4.

Seeing that it has far surpassed its goal, family friend Lauren Robins, who created the GoFundMe, posted, “Words cannot express how truly grateful we are for the outpouring of support over these last few days. You have truly shown how many people Dan’s life touched, and it means the world to Melanie to know just how much he was loved.”

The donations will now be put into a trust fund held by Melanie’s mother.

The fundraiser noted, “Dan worked tirelessly to provide for his family in a career he loved. He was a true artist and master of his craft, and the loss of his passion will be deeply mourned by the culinary community.”

The Ruffino’s Pasta Bar and Grill’s Facebook page said Tong was “a firm believer in constantly evolving and trying new things. He had a quick wit and a sassy style. He worked very hard and was loved deeply by his family at Ruffino’s and BarBea. Our staff were inspired daily by his hard work and love of food.”
