With a north of 80 per cent rejection of provincial transit agency’s latest officer, hundreds of GO Transit workers are set to go on strike on Monday (Nov. 7).

There will be 2200 station attendants, bus operators, maintenance workers and safety officers going on strike Monday.

Per media reports, Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1587 voted against GO Transit’s latest collective-agreement propoal and agreed to strike.

Metrolinx, which runs the GO commuter transit services, has emphasized that the strike would only affect GO buses and would not impact GO trains. The buses are relied upon by many residents of Mississauga, Brampton and Hamilton as well as Durham, Halton and Niagara regions to get to their jobs and post-secondary education classes.

The ATU 1587 has been without a contract since June. They were previously in strike position on Monday, but held off in order to vote on the new contract offer.

Two weeks ago, ATU said issues included job security, wages and keeping working in their bargaining unit instead of having it contracted out to non-union workers. Metrolinx stated on Oct. 19 that it had agreed to 67 improvements in working conditions.

The Amalgamated Transit Union also represents city bus drivers in Brampton, Hamilton, Mississauga-Milton and Hamilton. As members of the same union, they would have the right to refuse to cross any picket lines.

The CUPE-OSBCU job action that began on Friday has also led to local bus route cancellations in Mississauga.
