JD Sports Canada, an athletic apparel retailer that has expanded across the globe, is coming to Hamilton as it tries to get traction in Canada.

The retailer’s construction hoarding on the first level of the CF Lime Ridge shopping mall on Hamilton Mountain is almost impossible to miss. The United Kindom-based chain also told Retail Insider in the fall of 2021 that it is planning a major expansion in Canada, in partnership with Cadillac Fairview, whose holdings include the mall.

The company was founded just more than 40 years ago in Manchester, England. (The name derives from the first initials of cofounders John Wardle and David Makin.) It is now in 20 nations with almost 900 stores globally, and has been steadily opening in major Canadian markets. Its first location in Canada opened in the North York area of Toronto, while it has also moved into Edmonton, Vancouver and has a location opening in Calgary in two weeks.

Brands can be everything to self-described sneakerheads, and JD Sports sells the likes of adidas, Asics, Calvin Klein Performance, Converse, Levi, Nike, Puma, The North Face, Reebok, Under Armour and VANS.

Information about the chain and a timeline for a Hamilton opening may be obtained on Instagram (@jdsportsca), Twitter (@jdsportscanada) and online at jdsports.ca.

Interestingly, JD Sports’ Edmonton launch has involved helping promote the Edmonton Stingers of the Canadian Elite Basketball League. Hamilton is also part of the fourth-year league, with the Hamilton Honey Badgers.

Lime Ridge mall, located at 999 Upper Wentworth St., has a few other options for athletic apparal and sports equipment. Sport Chek is one of the mall’s flagship stores, and it also includes Foot Locker and two Lids locations.
