A Georgetown athlete is among the Canadian women’s hockey team that is celebrating a gold win at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games.

Following the win, Halton Hills Mayor Rick Bonnette congratulated the local hockey player who was nominated to compete in women’s hockey this year.

21-year-old Sarah Fillier is one of four hockey players from Halton Region that were nominated by Hockey Canada and the Canadian Olympic Committee to compete.

“It’s fantastic. I had shivers watching the game. To see our women at the top of the medal podium and one of our own reaching this monumental achievement is just incredible,” said Mayor Bonnette.

This year, three local athletes achieved their dream of making it to the Olympics, including 22-year-old Jasmine Baird for women’s snowboard and Sara Villani in bobsled.

“I speak for all of Town Council when I say, how very proud we are that our community was represented by three individuals who now bear the moniker of ‘Olympian,’” said the Mayor.

The Town is currently planning to formally recognize the athletes. Municipal marquees will also be posting a message of congratulations on the gold medal win for Sarah Fillier and the women’s hockey team.
