A new cafe is opening this summer in central Hamilton and this locally owned operation is looking for a little community support to bring this lush vision to life.

Hamilton’s Amanda Wright and Stef Dubbeldam are the best friends and creative forces behind Pinch Bakery and Plant Shop, which will be located at the former Jet Diner on Main St. East at Holton Ave.

“Meeting the need for a space for folks to gather, graze and grow, Pinch will combine a bakery, café and plant store all in one,” Wright and Dubbeldam said in a social media post.

“Our shop will feature daily baked goods, a full-service café and espresso bar, and endless lush tropical plants for you to both take home, and enjoy while you’re in the space.”

Wright is a pastry chef and professional chocolatier who is one of Hamilton’s Kitchen Collective’s founding members, and Dubbeldam is a plant enthusiast studying horticulture at the University of Guelph with years of experience in retail and management.

The pair launched a Kickstarter campaign earlier this week to raise funds to help make their new space more accessible.

“We plan to prioritize sustainability, accessibility and community in our design,” Pinch’s owners say in the Kickstarter campaign.

“Accessibility is our main focus, and we plan to use funds raised during this Kickstarter to transition two small bathrooms into one larger, accessible washroom, along with some other more minor changes to the shop.”

The Kickstarter is offering several rewards for contributors, including Pinch branded clothing and merchandise, a flower seedling kit and baked goods.

While Pinch is on track to open in the summer of 2022, Wright and Dubbeldam said timelines may shift due to the work still needing to be done at the new space where, in 2017, a fire occurred, shutting down Jet Diner.

As of Wednesday afternoon (April 6), Pinch’s Kickstarter was just about halfway to its goal of $10,000.
