Drivers should anticipate an increase in gas prices on Thursday (May 25).

According to Dan McTeague, President of Canadians for Affordable Energy, prices are forecasted to jump 5 cents per litre to an average price of 163.9 cents per litre for most major Ontario cities including the GTA, Ottawa, Hamilton and Niagara areas.

Meanwhile, Montreal will see an increase to about 174.9 cents per litre.

McTeague, who has spent much of his career forecasting price increases and decreases at the pump, says the current increase could be attributed to subsided concerns over the U.S. debt ceiling crisis.

However, he doesn’t believe prices for this summer will hit the same highs that they did last summer.
