Drivers in Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton and across Southern Ontario including Niagara, Halton and Durham are expected to face gas prices as high as $1.67 per litre by the end of this week and could be as soon as Thursday.

The jump from current levels is due to the crisis in the Ukraine, according to Canadians for Affordable Energy (CAE), a watchdog group that monitors the cost of fuel.

But first, tomorrow (March 2) prices are expected to rise to $1.60 per litre from the current average price of $1.58 before the big leap of an additional seven cents per litre by Thursday.

If the expected price is reached, it will be the most expensive gas has ever been in the Greater Toronto Area.

The CAE believes Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and fear of a growing conflict is behind the rise and cautions that prices could soar even higher in the weeks ahead.
