Illegal dumping of household trash, tires and other waste alongside roads north of the Greater Toronto Area is on the rise and police are warning offenders they’ll be hit hard in the wallet if they’re caught.
Items being dumped along roadways in and around the small town of Amaranth, just west of Orangeville, include “household garbage, tires, construction waste and even restaurant waste,” Ontario Provincial Police, Dufferin County detachment, said in a news release issued Monday.
Police remind people “the illegal dumping of garbage is an offence and those found in violation will be charged.”
OPP said officials at the Township of Amaranth have recently reported an increase in the “unsightly illegal dumping of garbage.” Cleanup efforts can be very costly for all Dufferin County taxpayers, police added.
OPP noted people caught illegally dumping can be charged with one or more of the following:
- engage in prohibited activity — Trespass to Property Act
- littering highway prohibited — Highway Traffic Act
- deposit waste without environmental approval — Environmental Protection Act
- illegal dumping — Town or Township bylaw
Police urge anyone who sees unknown materials and garbage being dumped from suspicious vehicles to call police right away at 1-888-310-1122 and report the incident. OPP ask that witnesses note the vehicle description, licence plate number, description of occupants and direction of travel.
To report illegal dumping after the fact, police ask people to call municipal offices at the town or township.
