Gang-related backyard break-ins on the rise in Ontario region

Durham Police are warning residents about a recent increase in residential break-and-enters believed to be linked to an organized group operating in Durham Region.

Investigators have identified a pattern of incidents occurring primarily in Clarington, Pickering, and Whitby, with the suspects using parks, trails, and greenspaces to access residential backyards before forcing entry into homes.

In some cases, police said, the bandits have shattered rear sliding glass doors, while in others they have used ladders to gain access to second-storey windows.

To avoid drawing attention, the suspects often carry work tools and may pose as landscapers or tradespeople while moving through neighbourhoods.

The suspects are generally described as male and wearing medical masks and baseball hats with dark coloured shorts, t-shirts and gloves and carrying backpacks.

Police are asking residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious individuals, especially those entering backyards, parks, or greenspaces “without a clear purpose.”

“Be alert to people carrying ladders or tools in residential areas who do not appear to be working at a nearby property. Ensure doors and windows are secured and consider outdoor lighting and security cameras.”

Police are asking residents to report suspicious activity to (905) 579-1520. If there is an immediate threat to public safety or a crime in progress, call 9-1-1.

Durham Police are also warning residents about distraction thefts, which are also on the rise in the region.

“Always be aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts. If a situation feels off or dangerous, walk away. Your safety is more important than any property a criminal is trying to steal. If you or a loved one ever find yourself in this situation, immediately contact police.”
