Fundraising set up to help family of woman murdered in Oshawa

A GoFundMe has been set up to help the family of Katie Kainz, who was murdered Sunday in Oshawa while doing what she loved – helping people.
Kainz, who turned 26 two weeks ago, was one of two women stabbed early Sunday morning near Simcoe Street and Adelaide Avenue. A graduate of Fleming College’s mental health and drug addictions worker program, Kainz died in hospital Tuesday. The young mother she was helping is listed in stable condition.
Kainz’s brother Tyler Dast, who is organizing the GoFundMe campaign to help his family deal with the tragedy, said outreach was his sister’s “passion” and she was always trying to help people.
“It wasn’t a rare sight to see Katie volunteering at our local homeless kitchens and local animal shelters … and would do whatever she could to help any of her friends and family,” Dast said. “Katie was the most caring young woman I’ve ever had the pleasure to love.”
Dast called his sister, who grew up in Seagrave in Scugog Township, a “beautiful energetic young lady whose life was taken way too early.” With no suspects in custody yet, Dast said the family is left with “too many questions and what ifs” about her death.
The family hopes the money raised will also fund a bench “for her friends and family to sit on” at her favourite spot in Port Perry’s Palmer Park.

The Harley G’s clothing store in Oshawa is also hosting a fundraiser for the family on April 1 and is taking donations for raffle items and prizes. “We just want to offer our condolences and do what we can to do help,” store owner Harley Guindon said on Instagram.
The fundraiser will be held at Harley G’s Oshawa (433 Simcoe Street South) on Saturday, April 1, starting at 11 a.m.
