A fugitive on the run for months doing time for assault and firearms charges has been found hiding out in a small town north of Brampton, investigators say.
Earlier this month, the OPP said Mohamed Ahmed had breached his statutory release while serving a more than three-year sentence for violent crimes. A Canada-wide warrant was issued for the 25-year-old fugitive, with the OPP releasing details of the incident on Sept. 11.
Police now say Ahmed has been arrested again, but new details reveal he was on the run for more than four months before the alert was issued.
Ahmed “went unlawfully at large” on May 6, police say.
The 25-year-old had been convicted of two counts each of possession of a prohibited restricted firearm with ammunition and aggravated assault, and one count each of discharge restricted/prohibited firearm with intent and assault with intentional use of force, police say.
Police said Ahmed was believed to be hiding in the GTA and that he was located and apprehended by members of the OPP Tactical Response Unit in Melancthon, approximately 70 kilometres north of Brampton.
The OPP’s Provincial R.O.P.E. squad thanked the public and the media for their assistance in the investigation.
