Freezing Rain Warning In Effect for Mississauga and Surrounding Cities
If you were planning to drive anywhere in Mississauga or surrounding areas today or tomorrow, you're probably rethinking your plans—and for good reason.
Environment Canada says a freezing rain warning is currently in effect for Mississauga, Brampton, Halton Hills, Milton, Oakville and Burlington.
In fact, at 3:29 p.m., the weather agency said "a potentially historic and ice storm expected this weekend" (which is something everyone has likely noticed and signed repeatedly over).
Residents have also been warned that ice pellets, mixed at times with snow, are continuing to fall.
The inclement weather is forecast to persist into this evening, with several centimetres of ice pellets expected.
Environment Canada says the precipitation will taper off to patchy freezing drizzle this evening. However, freezing rain is expected to move back in overnight, and may persist well into Sunday before changing over to rain.
Significant rain may fall late Sunday and Sunday night, creating localized flooding.
Ice build up of 10 to possibly 20 mm is likely by late Sunday.
The weather agency says that ice accumulations of this magnitude combined with gusty northeast winds of 70 to 80 km/h may result in considerable power outages due to fallen tree limbs and power lines.
Dangerous winter driving conditions are expected on untreated roads Saturday and Sunday, worsened by fallen tree limbs.
If you're traveling to Burlington or Oakville, note that Environment Canada says ice build up to 25 mm appears likely across that region by midday Sunday. It may exceed that in some locales. Strong winds gusting to 90 to 100 km/h are also expected tonight into Sunday.
All non-essential travel should be avoided.
