A freezing rain warning has been issued for Mississauga, Brampton, Burlington, Oakville, Milton, Hamilton and Durham Region.

Environment Canada issued the warning today (Feb. 16) for much of Southern Ontario.

The freezing rain is expected to start tonight with ice build-up of up to a few millimetres possible.

“Precipitation may begin as rain or ice pellets in some areas before transitioning to freezing rain and ice pellets,” Environment Canada warns.

The ice accumulation may be limited in the beginning as ground temperatures may be above zero.

But freezing rain conditions may last through the evening and overnight hours in some areas before changing to freezing drizzle or light snow by early Friday morning.

Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery.

“Take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas,” Environment Canada warns. “Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions.”

Freezing rain warnings are issued when rain falling in sub-zero temperatures creates ice build-up and icy surfaces.
