Expect ice-coated cars and treacherous roads in the morning as Environment Canada is calling for freezing rain overnight (Jan. 16) in the Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton, Halton, Durham and Niagara regions.

Winds up to 15 km/h, a late night windchill of -8C and periods of rain overnight will add up to the areas being virtual ice rinks by morning.

“A period of freezing rain is expected beginning early Tuesday morning. A few millimetres of ice accretion is possible on some surfaces,” said Environment Canada. “Freezing rain is expected to change over to light rain by late Tuesday morning or early afternoon.”

The weather agency further warned, “Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery. Slow down driving in slippery conditions.”

“Watch for tail lights ahead and maintain a safe following distance. There may be a significant impact on rush hour traffic in urban areas.”
