After two weeks of sporadic bus cancellations due to driver shortages Durham parents woke up to freezing rain and cancellations across every zone.

Both the Durham Student Transportation Service, which operates school buses in all Durham municipalities save Clarington; and Student Transportation Services Central Ontario, which takes care of Clarington and parts east, have cancelled all routes Friday “due to inclement weather.”

Environment Canada has not issued an alert for Durham Region – eastern Ontario is under a freezing rain and snow alert – but icy conditions swept in Thursday night anyway, forcing the bus companies to cancel all service.

The good news is there is no school in most of Durham anyway as Durham District School Board high schools and all schools in the Durham District Catholic School Board are enjoying PA days today.

Durham public elementary schools will remain open.

Environment Canada is blaming a Texas Low trekking south of Ontario as being responsible for the messy conditions we’ll experience into the first half of Friday. Precipitation pushed into southern Ontario on Thursday evening, becoming heavier across the region through the nighttime hours.

Icy roads will present a hazard to motorists through early Friday morning across a large swath of southern Ontario.

Northern regions will get some heavy snow as the day progresses, but Durham is only expected to receive a couple of centimetres.
