A pilot project is bringing free Wi-Fi to downtown Oshawa.

Durham Broadband, an affiliate of Oshawa Power, has established a ‘Connected Corridor’ spanning four downtown blocks, beginning at King St. and Centre St. and running east to Mary St., which will be connected with free, on-street Wi-Fi.

When in the area, visitors will be encouraged to use their smartphones ― log in once to obtain Wi-Fi in the corridor and receive meal deals and business promotions directly to their device.

“This is one of the many projects that support community needs and demonstrates Durham Broadband’s agility and ability to build the infrastructure needed to create a modern city, “said Ivano Labricciosa, President and CEO of Oshawa Power, adding that Infrastructure and businesses need to keep up with demand and creating Wi-Fi-accessible areas for the community is the project’s underpinning.

The hope is the pilot project become permanent, said Domenic Albis, President of Downtown Oshawa Business Alliance (DOBA). “This level of connectivity will open the doors to creating a more connected, digitally-enabled and prosperous community.”

Labricciosa thanked DOBA and the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce for their support in promoting the ‘Connected Corridor’ with signs and banners for instructions on using the service and sign-in process.
