Free ‘Skateboard Jam’ for youth coming to Pickering

A Youth Skateboard Jam is coming to Pickering on August 15, a non-test con-test open to kids 13-19.

The Pickering Youth Skateboard Jam, part of the City of Pickering’s Free Teen Stuff program is taking place on Saturday, August 15 from noon to 4 p.m. at West Shore Community Centre Skate Spot. The free event is open to Pickering youth, with organizers promising a “high‑energy” day of skating, community connection, and non-test competition.

The skateboard jam will feature best-of-two 60-second runs and an overall best trick challenge, providing young skaters an opportunity to showcase their talent, creativity and style. Prizes will be awarded to top performers.

A statement from the city said the event reflects Pickering’s commitment to providing accessible recreational opportunities that encourage youth engagement, active living, skill development, and positive community connections.

Pickering’s Free Teen Stuff is an initiative for local youth aged 13 to 19 that provides free access to community centres, high schools, and recreation facilities for sports, drop-in games and social events.

Participants need a free membership, which requires a parent/guardian signature on the first visit.

The program offers a variety of activities for teens, including dance, pickleball, volleyball, board games, ball hockey, basketball and breakdancing, drama and special theme nights, as well as other social and sport activities.

Locations include East Shore Community Centre (games room, breakdancing, gymnasium), George Ashe Library & Community Centre (games room and youth programming, including sewing workshops), St. Mary Catholic Secondary School (gymnasium / basketball), Pine Ridge Secondary School (gymnasium / basketball & volleyball), Dunbarton High School gymnasium / basketball) and Chestnut Hill Developments Recreation Centre (swimming, skating, racquetball and squash and shinny hockey).
