Are you a strong swimmer who’s up for a challenge and wants to help the community? Then Brampton’s free aquatic safety certification might be in your lane.

Brampton’s Aquatic Certification Training Program is back this year, offering free safety courses to prospective lifeguards and swim instructors, so long as they pass an initial skills assessment.

At the Bronze Medallion level, participants will be evaluated on their swimming strokes, take part in a 400-metre endurance swim in under 12 minutes, and recover a ring from the bottom of the pool at a depth of 8 feet.

The training steps up a notch at the Bronze Cross level where swimmers will again do a 400-metre swim in just 11 minutes, as well as retrieve a 10 lb. brick from the bottom of the pool before stepping up to the National Lifeguard certification, which becomes even more challenging.

The free course offers are open to residents aged 14 and older and the City says applicants should be strong swimmers with a desire to help others and teach lifesaving skills.

Completing the course will see participants certified for:

  • Bronze Medallion and Emergency First Aid
  • Bronze Cross and Standard First Aid
  • Lifesaving Society Swim, Lifesaving and Emergency First Aid Instructors
  • Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard (Pool Option)
